USSSP: A Scout's Duty to God and Country

A Great Idea! Scouts in the Anna-Jonesboro, Illinois area participated in a Ten Commandments Hike on September 25, 1999. Details about the hike were announced on Scouts-L. From the announcement:

Hello everyone. For those living close by the southern Illinois area, listed below is the information for the 2nd Annual Anna-Jonesboro Ten Commandments Hike to be held on Saturday, September 25.

Thank you for your interest in the Anna-Jonesboro Illinois Ten Command- ments Hike. This will be a rare opportunity for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to share an experience, demonstrating their Duty to God as they Serve God.

Please complete and return the registration form by August 1 to ensure that you will receive your patches the day of the hike. Prepayment is required in order to finance the patch order. Registrations after 8/1 are welcome, but we cannot guarantee that you will receive your patches the day of the hike. (Registration form in 2nd message.)

Your start time should be between 8:30 and 10:30. Notification of start time will be with your confirmation packet. If you need to hike with another unit, please attach a note. The 4.3 mile hike (with lunch break) will last about five (5) hours.

All hikers will begin at First Christian Church of Anna. Report to the church 15 minutes before your start time.

At the registration table you will receive (1) map of hike route; (2) group number; (3) directions for pre-positioning lunches and/or return vehicles; (4) details about limited shuttle service [for drivers only]; (5) shuttle options for Tigers/Daisies; and (6) instructions for BSA 2nd class hiking requirement [bring a compass, clipboard, pencil].

New hikers to the Ten Commandments Hike must purchase both the 3" center patch and 1999 rocker patch. The cost for both patches is $2. Veteran hikers may purchase only the rocker for $1. Patch collectors will NOT be able to purchase multiple patches.

You will need to provide your own adult leadership to accompany your youth.

Lunches can be carried on the hike, or pre-positioned at the lunch site. Sack lunches can be pre-purchased from Cub Scout Pack 44. See 2nd message for details.

There are a number of fast food restaurants in Anna, but NONE OF THEM are near the hike route.

Camping facilities are available at local BSA and GSUSA camps. See 2nd message for details.
